Amazing Solar Powered Homes

One of the first things that I did when I moved into my new home was start looking into my options for solar power. I’m a big believer in reducing dependence on natural resources that are unsustainable, and one of the best ways to do that is by using natural resources that are sustainable, like sunlight. I was thrilled to have my own home that I could customize with solar power. I found that there were all kinds of options for solar power besides those big clunky solar panels. I eventually settled on solar shingles for my roof, and I’m looking into solar powered windows, too. I started this blog to share more information about solar trends with people who are as interested in sustainable energy as I am. I hope to help you understand how contractors can help with these large projects!

Two Tips For The Next Time You Install Replacement Windows

Your home's windows are a part of the building that you most likely pay little attention. However, this can prove to be a costly mistake because poorly fitted or maintained windows can be a source of major energy loss. Luckily, it is possible for you to replace your windows with new frames, but this is a relatively complex task. New homeowners may feel overwhelmed by this task, but there are a couple of tips that you can follow to help ensure that this process goes as smoothly as possible for you.

Ensure That The Windows Actually Need To Be Replaced

It may seem like it would be easy to tell if the windows needed to be replaced, but this is not always the case. Often, people do not properly maintain their windows, and this may lead them to believe that it will be necessary to replace them. Yet, there may be times where a simple upgrade can drastically improve your windows and save you from going through this task.

The weather stripping on the windows is designed to prevent drafts and leaks from forming around the window. However, this stripping will wear down as time progresses, and this can compromise its efficiency. By replacing the weatherstripping, you may be able to correct the drafts that had you considering upgrading the entire window. If upgrading the stripping fails to correct the problem, you may have no other choice outside replacing all of the windows.

Consider Fiberglass Window Frames

If replacing the windows is the only viable option for your home, some homeowners make the mistake of automatically assuming wood window frames are the best option. However, this is probably not the case. Wood window frames require extensive maintenance to keep them looking great and problem free. In addition to sealing them, you will also need to paint the windows to ensure that they match the rest of your house.

Luckily, you can avoid this added chore by opting for fiberglass windows. These frames are made from a material that lacks the various pores and small cracks that naturally occur in wood. By eliminating these areas, fiberglass frames can go years without needing to be painted, and they will never need to be sealed against moisture damage.

Having replacement windows installed is one of the more unpleasant aspects of being a homeowner. Yet, many first-time homeowners may not fully understand what all goes into this task. However, understanding the importance of checking the weatherstripping and opting for fiberglass window frames can help ensure that this project goes as smoothly as possible for your home.
