Amazing Solar Powered Homes

One of the first things that I did when I moved into my new home was start looking into my options for solar power. I’m a big believer in reducing dependence on natural resources that are unsustainable, and one of the best ways to do that is by using natural resources that are sustainable, like sunlight. I was thrilled to have my own home that I could customize with solar power. I found that there were all kinds of options for solar power besides those big clunky solar panels. I eventually settled on solar shingles for my roof, and I’m looking into solar powered windows, too. I started this blog to share more information about solar trends with people who are as interested in sustainable energy as I am. I hope to help you understand how contractors can help with these large projects!

Considerations When Switching To Solar

You are probably always looking for ways to cut your energy costs if you can. It's even better if you can do something that also benefits the environment at the same time. One of the most effective ways to accomplish both of these objectives is installing a solar energy system on your roof. Solar energy systems offer a number of significant benefits to homeowners, from entirely free power to the ability to reduce or eliminate your dependence on the local power company. However, before you invest in a solar energy system, there are a number of things you should consider.

How Much Power Do You Need?

You first need to determine how much power you are using in your home on a regular basis. It's best to look at your family's power consumption over the course of an entire year. This will give you a reliable benchmark for making your system selection. Keep in mind, it's always a good idea to find ways to reduce your energy consumption, since this will make your new solar energy system even more efficient.

How Much Power Do You Need to Replace?

While you might want to be able to get all of the energy you use in your home from solar panels, this can be fairly pricey and might not even be practical for your home. Most homeowners just want to be able to reduce their current energy consumption by installing a solar energy system. Weigh the benefits of a partial system versus a full system before making your decision

How Much Power Can You Get?

You need to determine the solar potential of your property. Because of frequent cloud cover, some areas of the country get less sunlight than others, which makes it more difficult for solar panels to be effective. However, if you happen to live in a particularly cold climate, you might still be able to get a fair amount of power using a solar energy system. This is because solar panels are more effective the colder they get.

Where Are You Going to Put the System?

An important point when you are considering a solar energy system is determining where you're going to place the solar panels. In most cases, solar panels are placed on the home's roof. If you're going to do this, you need to be certain that that section of roof points toward the path of the sun and that there are no physical obstructions blocking the rays of the sun from hitting the roof. In other words, you may have to cut down some of your trees.
